From July 10 to 11, the 8th China Oil and Gas Pipeline Trenchless Engineering Technology Exchange Conference was successfully held in Langfang, Hebei Province. Guided by the China Petroleum Engineering Construction Association and co-hosted by the Trenchless Crossing Technology Committee along with multiple organizations, the conference was themed “Safe, Efficient, Green, and Intelligent.”It focused on cutting-edge technologies and practical applications in the field of trenchless engineering, aiming to promote integrated development across industry, academia, and research. During the conference, Hebei Huayuan Science and Industry Co., Ltd. was honored with the 2024–2025 "Most Influential Trenchless Project" Award.
The event attracted over 200 representatives from enterprises, academic experts, and personnel from relevant institutions across the country. Throughout the conference, several guest speakers delivered thematic reports on topics such as the characteristics and implementation plans of trenchless projects in national pipeline networks, the 2024 development report on trenchless technology in oil and gas pipelines, and innovations and breakthroughs in high-difficulty HDD (Horizontal Directional Drilling) projects. These discussions deeply explored the latest theoretical achievements and engineering applications in the trenchless field.
At the awards ceremony held on the morning of July 10, Huayuan was recognized for its outstanding performance in the “Hong Kong Dongyong HDD Crossing Project” and received the 2024–2025 "Most Influential Trenchless Project" Award. Ms. Wang Xiaobing, Executive General Manager of Huayuan, accepted the award on behalf of the company. The award, jointly issued by the China Petroleum Engineering Construction Association and the Trenchless Crossing Technology Committee, was selected from multiple nominees. It not only acknowledges Huayuan's exceptional capability in overcoming complex geological construction challenges but also affirms its ongoing innovation and breakthroughs in the trenchless engineering field.
Huayuan has always adhered to a philosophy of technical innovation and breakthroughs. The "Hong Kong Dongyong HDD Crossing Project" was yet another high-difficulty project successfully completed by Huayuan after the original contractor failed to resolve the challenges and withdrew midway.
In June 2024, during the HDPE pipe pullback, the original contractor encountered severe drill jamming while crossing a rock formation. The contractor's directional drilling recovery barrel and Bottom Hole Assembly (BHA) became firmly stuck at the lowest point of the crossing curve due to geological constraints. Even applying 40 to 50 tons of pull force failed to release it. Worse yet, during subsequent hole-cleaning operations, the drill pipe unexpectedly broke, causing the drill head and a section of the BHA to fall into the borehole, plunging the entire project into a high-risk standstill.
Faced with the dual technical challenges of a jammed BHA and a broken drill pipe, Huayuan stepped in under urgent circumstances, taking on the responsibility of resolving the blockage and completing the pipe pullback. Under the leadership of Chief Engineer Shi, the team made repeated adjustments and finally succeeded in releasing the jam and pulling out the remaining PE pipe from the borehole. During the recovery operations, the team discovered a large quantity of oversized rock fragments in the borehole, which posed significant additional challenges to the upcoming pullback work. After in-depth discussion, analysis, and comparison of multiple solutions, the team decided to first attempt a trial pullback using a floatation barrel. Once the trial confirmed borehole passability, they proceeded with the formal pullback operation using the floatation barrel to guide the PE pipe.
On April 2, 2025, the Hong Kong Dongyong HDD Crossing Project — with a crossing length of 366 meters, pipe diameter OD800 mm, and wall thickness of 72.6 mm — was successfully completed. This once again proved Huayuan’s core capabilities in tackling complex working conditions.
During the thematic report session on the afternoon of July 10, Mr. Dong Xiangyang, Manager of the Engineering Technology Department at Huayuan, delivered a keynote speech titled “Innovation and Breakthroughs in High-Difficulty HDD Projects.” He shared vivid insights into Huayuan’s development journey, technical strengths, signature projects, and future strategies, highlighting the company’s leadership and achievements in the HDD field. He also expressed Huayuan’s commitment and capability to continuously innovate and push boundaries in complex HDD projects, drawing high attention from the attendees.
At 13:00 on July 11, the conference organizing committee arranged a site visit for over 40 guests to Huayuan Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. Mr. Li Fei, General Manager and Assistant to the Chairman of Huayuan Heavy Industry, accompanied the delegation and provided detailed introductions to the processes and technical capabilities of the machining workshop, assembly workshop, repair workshop, and welding area. Guests expressed that the on-site visit gave them a more intuitive and in-depth understanding of Huayuan’s manufacturing capabilities and engineering standards, and many praised the company’s leading position in the trenchless engineering sector.
This conference not only provided a high-quality platform for exchange within the trenchless engineering field but also further promoted the application level of trenchless pipeline crossing technologies. Looking ahead, Hebei Huayuan Science and Industry Co., Ltd. will continue to uphold the spirit of innovation, increase R&D investment, and enhance its core competitiveness, contributing more wisdom and strength to the sustainable development of the trenchless industry in China and globally.
